Associate Scientist, Purification & Analytics

The Associate Scientist, under direction of established Scientists, will play a significant role in the characterization of proteins expressed using AbSci’s proprietary E. coli expression platform, including the development and execution of chromatographic techniques to purify proteins and assess their quality. Core responsibilities include conducting hands-on research for the development of new protein assays, integrating these assays into standard workflows, and supporting ongoing purification activities. The individual in this role should have a strong technical and conceptual background, and will act independently to determine appropriate methods and procedures to accomplish tasks. The ideal candidate will have a passion for scientific innovation, exhibit adept technical skills, and be comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment where research projects are ever growing, evolving, and changing.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biochemistry or related scientific discipline
  • 0-4 years post-graduate research experience
  • Expert at SDS-PAGE and Western Blotting
  • Experience with a diverse range of preparative chromatographic techniques, including IMAC, IEX, SEC, and HIC
  • Experience with analytical techniques such analytical sizing and reversed phase chromatography
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Excel. Familiarity with other analytical software is a plus
  • Familiarity with FPLC instrumentation, such as AKTA systems and accompanying UNICORN software
  • Familiarity with HPLC/UPLC instruments, such as Agilent systems, and/or Waters systems as well as accompanying Empower software.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills

Research Associate I, Molecular Sciences

The Research Associate I, under direction of established Scientists, will play a significant role in the further development and utilization of AbSci’s proprietary E. coli expression platform. Core responsibilities include utilizing modern cloning strategies to construct expression vectors, executing genetic modifications to AbSci’s microbial expression strain, and supporting small-scale protein expression studies. The ideal candidate will exhibit technical proficiency, attention to detail, a passion for scientific creativity, and be comfortable in a dynamic startup environment where priorities change and develop rapidly.

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS degree in Molecular Biology or related scientific discipline
  • 2-5 years of relevant hands-on research experience
  • Well-versed in molecular biology as a primary capability
  • Experience with a diverse range of DNA manipulation methods, including PCR, restriction enzyme-based and restriction-free cloning methods
  • Experience with handling microorganisms in microtiter plates, tubes, and shake flask cultivation scales
  • Familiarity with SDS-PAGE and Western blotting
  • Basic biochemistry skills are a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and Google Docs and Sheets. Familiarity with DNA analysis software is desirable
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, and strong organizational habits

Associate Scientist, Molecular Sciences

The Associate Scientist, under direction of Senior Scientists, will play a significant role in the further development and utilization of AbSci’s proprietary E. coli expression platform. Primary responsibilities include developing novel assays for protein quantitation and characterization, and optimization of protein expression conditions using AbSci’s platform technology.   The ideal candidate is passionate about science, applies a creative approach to problem-solving, exhibits strong communication skills, and can execute nimbly and efficiently in a dynamic startup environment.  This position may include supervisory responsibilities of lab assistants and research associates.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • BS or MS degree in a related scientific discipline with 5+ years of research experience in an industry environment, or a PhD with 0-2 years of relevant postgraduate experience
  • Extensive practical background in protein expression and characterization
  • Demonstrated experience and analytical skills for assay development and optimization
  • Appreciation for high-throughput workflows and complex data sets
  • Specific experience with ForteBio Octet, Protein Simple Wes, or ELISA is a plus
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in applicable areas
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience training colleagues on protocols, techniques, and equipment
  • Documents experimental results in an up-to-date electronic lab notebook system

Associate Scientist I, Analytical Development

The Associate Scientist, under direction of established Scientists, will play a significant role in the characterization of proteins expressed using SoluPro, AbSci’s proprietary E. coli expression platform. The individual in this role should have a strong technical and conceptual background, and will act independently to determine appropriate methods and procedures to accomplish tasks. Lastly, the ideal candidate will have a passion for scientific innovation, exhibit adept technical skills, and be comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment where research projects are ever growing, evolving, and changing.

Responsibilities:

  • Development and execution of analytical chromatography and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to characterize proteins and assess their quality, which includes:
         o    Intact mass analysis for determination of post-translational modifications
         o    Development of RP-UPLC methods for protein quantitation
         o    Peptide mapping with LC-MS/MS for sequence confirmation
         o    Quantitative monitoring of modified peptides including disulfide linkage analysis
         o    Determination of product and process related impurity analysis
  • Conducting hands-on research for the development of new assays, integrating these assays into standard workflows, and supporting activities in the fermentation, molecular sciences, and purification groups

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry or related scientific discipline
  • 0-4 years post-graduate research experience
  • Expert at applying mass spectrometry to characterize proteins
  • Experience with a range of chromatographic techniques, including reversed-phase, IEX, and SEC
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with analytical software packages such as MassLynx, Xcaliber, Chemstation, and Empower
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex issues relating to analytical hardware
  • Background providing training and troubleshooting support to other scientists
  • Proficiency in Excel and other productivity software
  • Experience with protein purification, SDS-PAGE, and Western Blotting is a plus
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills
