Associate Scientist, Purification & Analytics

The Associate Scientist, under direction of established Scientists, will play a significant role in the characterization of proteins expressed using AbSci’s proprietary E. coli expression platform, including the development and execution of chromatographic techniques to purify proteins and assess their quality. Core responsibilities include conducting hands-on research for the development of new protein assays, integrating these assays into standard workflows, and supporting ongoing purification activities. The individual in this role should have a strong technical and conceptual background, and will act independently to determine appropriate methods and procedures to accomplish tasks. The ideal candidate will have a passion for scientific innovation, exhibit adept technical skills, and be comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment where research projects are ever growing, evolving, and changing.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biochemistry or related scientific discipline
  • 0-4 years post-graduate research experience
  • Expert at SDS-PAGE and Western Blotting
  • Experience with a diverse range of preparative chromatographic techniques, including IMAC, IEX, SEC, and HIC
  • Experience with analytical techniques such analytical sizing and reversed phase chromatography
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Excel. Familiarity with other analytical software is a plus
  • Familiarity with FPLC instrumentation, such as AKTA systems and accompanying UNICORN software
  • Familiarity with HPLC/UPLC instruments, such as Agilent systems, and/or Waters systems as well as accompanying Empower software.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills

Director, Fermentation

We are currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Director, Fermentation with a strong background in microbial fermentation process development to join our team. This person will report to the Vice President, Operations, and lead a team of scientist and associates to support the development and scale-up of the fermentation process for partner molecules/biologics. Additionally, this position will play a critical role in the continued development of AbSci’s core technology at the fermentation scale.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for scientific innovation, exhibit adept technical skills, and be comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment where research project are ever growing, evolving, and changing. Main responsibilities include conceptualizing and coordinating the execution of fermentation experiments across multiple scales (250mL and 30L), leadership of a team of scientists and associates, and communication of technical progress to senior management and partners. Capable of working with a high degree of independence. This position is a part of AbSci’s scientific leadership team, which plays an integral role in the direction of company culture and scientific focus.

 Responsibilities:

  • Assume primary responsibility for strategic direction, experimental design, and supervision of fermentation process development activities
  • Perform data analysis of scientific results and present internally to team members and senior management
  • Recruit scientific and technical talent to grow fermentation team
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire scientists and junior members
  • Manage multiple independent experiments concurrently, including maintaining effective data capture, technical protocols, and analysis
  • Champion and lead new developments of AbSci’s core technology and coordinate cross- functional collaborative projects
  • Document experimental results and maintain an up-to-date electronic lab notebook
  • Provide leadership and drive change through company’s scientific leadership team

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology or related field
  • 6+ years of directly relevant experience in an industry setting
  • Experience supervising a team of at least 3 researchers
  • Experience with microbial systems, especially E. coli, for protein expression in bioreactors
  • Deep understanding of bench-scale fermentation units (Sartorius, Applikon, DASGIP) and associated control software
  • Proficiency developing scalable processes and performing tech transfer
  • Understanding of statistics and statistical software (JMP)
  • Experience in protein engineering, molecular biology and cell physiology/metabolism a plus
